Screens§

2step is composed of four sequencing screens and four system screens.

Remember also the colors' meanings: orange indicates steps, and green indicates values.

The four sequencing screens are as follows:

1. The home screen is a hub to all the other screens, and lets you toggle steps on and off. You can switch between different channels or their pages of steps in this view.
2. The parameter screen lets you update any parameter value: the base value, step overrides, cv mappings, or per-step cv overrides are all done here.
3. The step select screen lets you choose particular steps whose value to override on the parameter screen. You can also choose steps directly from the home screen.
4. The pattern generation screen lets you generate a Euclidean or even-interval pattern to either toggle steps on and off with, or to choose steps to edit the parameter overrides of.

The four system screens are:

1. The input monitor screen lets you see a live display of your input CV values. Very handy! It also lets you choose a CV input as your parameter edit target.
2. The tempo/transport screen shows your current BPM and multiplier, and play/pause the system.
3. Accessed from the tempo/transport screen, the settings screens let you customize the system, patch, and channel settings for your needs. Everything from accessibility options to channel behavior mods are available here.
4. The memory screen lets you load and save patches, and undo/redo anything you have done on your current patch.

This page will focus on helping you navigate the parameter space spanning the sequencing screens: accessing and editing particular parameters, cv assignments, and step customizations. For detailed descriptions of each screen, visit its page from the navigation.

Returning home§

A quick reminder that no matter where you are in 2step, you can always give shift three taps and you'll return home, just like Dorothy.

Accessing and editing parameters§

There are four total sets of parameters you can edit in 2step:

1. The channel base value that is used everywhere unless overridden.
2. The channel cv base mapping that determines how much of each CV input influences the base value.
3. The step value that can, if defined, override the channel base value for a particular step.
4. The step cv mapping that can, if defined, override channel cv mappings for a particular step.

When you press any parameter button (gate, slew, amt, div, jump) you step into then toggle through the parameters available on that button. When you press any CV source button (x, y, s&h) you step into then toggle through the CV sources available on that button.

Selecting a parameter§

From the home screen, press any parameter button (gate, slew, amt, div, jump) to begin editing a parameter. Each button holds two parameters, so for example if from the home screen you press slew once, you'll be editing set slew rate; press it again and you'll be editing release slew rate, and one more press brings you back to the home screen.

Once inside "parameter space", you can additionally press page to page down to a second layer of somewhat more obscure options. You can toggle back and forth between the page layers freely. So to continue the example, press page while looking at set slew rate to access set slew curve, and same for release slew.

Here you can see the 2x2 layout (displayed on the pagelights in green—green means values) of the parameter space within each button. When you press the parameter buttons, you cycle through the left then right column of the grid. When you press the page button, you toggle between the top and bottom rows of the grid.

Here are the two sequencer parameter buttons. They do not (yet) have a second layer behind the page button, although we plan to move chance from amt to jump soon.

What will replace it on the amt button? The hope is we can do v/oct quantize amount and put it there.

Selecting a CV source mapping§

From the home, parameter, or step select screens, press any CV source button (x, y, s&h) to toggle through the CV sources. From the home screen, this brings up a CV input source monitor that is a really useful tool to have on your rack. If from there you then press a parameter button, you enter the parameter edit screen as usual but you're setting a CV mapping amount for that parameter.

If you're already on a parameter screen, you toggle from value mapping into and through the available CV source mappings then back to value mapping, just as from the home screen pressing a parameter button toggles through the parameters on that button then back to home.

The x and y buttons are arranged under the x and y input jacks, and each toggle through the two jacks above them: x goes through x then w, and y covers y then z. The s&h button only holds the internal sample & hold source; pressing the button again leaves CV mappings immediately.

You can see the same layout in the pagelights, always in yellow. The sample & hold source lights all pagelights in yellow (we try to avoid unnecessary blinking).

Choosing steps to customize§

Either of the previous classes of value—base channel assignments and channel CV source mappings—can be overridden and customized on a per-step basis. There are two ways to accomplish this: you can press and hold combinations of buttons from the home screen much like other devices that support parameter locking, or you can choose steps from within the parameter space at any time.

When you are editing a parameter by steps, the green pagelight representing the parameter will blink orange (remember, orange means steps).

To choose steps quickly from the home screen:

If you have used parameter locking on other devices, this should be a familiar input pattern.

Any time you start holding a new button you can let go of the previous button(s) you were holding, and the device will remember them for you.

If you are already on the parameter screen, press or hold the shift button to go to the step select screen.

Press shift again or release it to return to edit the parameter values for those steps. If no steps are chosen, the channel base value is edited.

Putting it together§

So in summary, this is how you navigate the parameter space, the four sets of values described above. At any time on the home, parameter, or step select screens, you can press:

These toggles allow you to choose any combination of parameter, cv mapping, and steps (or no steps to target the channel value) to edit. From the home screen there are some additional shortcuts for speedier access:

If you need to access a second layer parameter or CV, just release then press or hold the button again after the shortcut.
